Midwest Living Review

The So Long Saloon is a fun, eclectic, energetic college-town bar and eatery, with nine burgers to choose from.

Bars, shops and restaurants line the streets of Kansas State University students' favorite hangout, the historic Aggieville entertainment district. Just a block from campus, it's the place to shop at boutiques and book stores during the day and to pack the bars at night. Like many establishments here, So Long Saloon serves brews and burgers, but the Saloon's get pretty creative. The blue cheese, the Aloha (with grilled pineapple), the Green Chili Cheeze, a 10-layer Cowboy Challenge and the Resist Temptation Burger (topped with a fried egg, bacon and cheese, and once awarded "best burger" by the Kansas CouBeefncil) have folks lined up to get a spot in the one-room, 46-seater eatery (weekend waits can easily be an hour). The burgers are a hearty half-pound of ground chuck, a special grind from the Kansas State University Meat Department. They come with made-from-scratch spicy slaw, potato salad or fries. Prices are reasonable ($7.75 for a basic burger with side). Burgers arrive hot -- the place is so small they hustle the food right out -- and juicy. Buns are big and sized just right for the half-pound patty, fried egg and bacon on the Resist Temptation burger ($8.50). The main glitch is maybe too much juiciness; there's a pool of juice in the bottom of the basket and the bun is soggy from that. The bacon isn't overly crisp either, but it's still tasty overall. So Long Saloon is a fun, eclectic, energetic college-town bar and eatery (open for lunch and dinner daily, closed Mondays), where burgers, brews and more keep the joint jumping.
