Midwest Living Review

Lisa Waterman Gray
While rural Louisburg lacks a dynamic core, visitors will find enticing spots to shop, flavors to savor, and beautiful scenery.

Incorporated in 1882, Louisburg lies amid rolling hills, where wooded areas and streams intersperse with gravel roads and wide fields. Many horses and cows graze in this area, and turkey vultures and red-tailed hawks frequently soar above. American Indian tribes, traders, missionaries and settlers were among the town's earliest inhabitants. Today, fewer than 3,000 residents live here, with many commuting to larger cities for work. Louisburg's main street offers little for visitors. But there are some bright spots, including the 8,000-square-foot Once Upon A Time home decor and antiques store, and the Louisburg Cider Mill. Visitors can enjoy free celestial views through one of the nation's largest telescopes at Powell Observatory. Located in Young Park and built by the Astronomical Society of Kansas City in 1984, it offers free public programs on Saturday evenings from May through October.
