Lawrence's free Robert J. Dole Institute of politics chronicles the political career of the Kansas native while exhibits highlight historic Kansas events.

No matter your party preference, the Robert J. Dole Institute of Politics gives a worthwhile, Kansas-centric historical perspective on our nation's governmental process. Anchoring Kansas University's West Campus, the political learning center chronicles the life and political career of Kansas native, senator and presidential candidate Robert Dole. Additionally, interactive exhibits and videos teach visitors about the legislative process, the benefits of bipartisan government and the value of civil service. Interesting historical exhibits show how Kansas has always been an epicenter of political change for our nation. Landmark Kansas political events covered include the pre-Civil War Kansas-Missouri border battles over slavery, the election of the first female mayor in the country, and the abolishment of school segregation in Topeka. Admission is free to the $11 million center. The structure incorporates two steel columns from the World Trade Center, a granite state floor map and a photographic memorial wall honoring 4,000 World War II Kansas veterans. A 32,000-square-foot pool reflects the stunning white stone building and its 29-foot stained-glass window of a waving American flag.
