Innkeeper Betsy Reed offers that perfect blend of what you hope to find in a B&B owner. She is friendly, interested (and interesting) and helpful without being too intrusive. She lets her guests shape their visit. We booked the only room with a private bath, which was spacious, comfy and outfitted with all we needed. A long soak in the claw-foot tub was a great way to relax, so was playing in the tree swing out front. The one odd touch: the owners' clothes in the dresser drawers and closets of our guest room.
The curb appeal is high for those who enjoy country retreats. The home looks like a log cabin, but is actually covered in high-quality log siding. The flower beds and extensive veggie gardens are lush, and gardeners will find themselves coveting the new greenhouse, which also provides a warm spot for newborn goats.
Those goats aren’t the inn’s only animals. They are joined by sheep, turkeys, cows, pigs, a rooster and a donkey. The inn’s “backyard,” where the animals live among the outbuildings, offers a picture-perfect shot of rural life. We found ourselves so enamored of feeding cookies and peppermints to the donkey that we didn’t want to leave.
When we did, our bellies were full from a hearty farm breakfast of bacon, scrambled eggs and French toast. And the price was affordable, at $95 for a stay in the largest guest room. Just know that credit cards are not accepted, so bring plenty of cash.
