Midwest Living Review

Miami County's largest water playground offers a full-service marina as well as swimming beaches and plenty of choice fishing spots, amid a multipurpose state park.

If you enjoy being on or near the water, Hillsdale Lake is a perfect destination. Powerboat and personal watercraft owners will find easily accessible boat ramps and pedestrian docks located throughout Hillsdale State Park. Water lovers who prefer to rent vehicles have plenty of options at Jayhawk Marina Inc., a terrific year-round asset at the lake. Watercraft owners may rent covered slips for the day; monthly and annual options are also available. The marina offers a heated indoor dock area and fueling station, too. Purchase a protective straw hat or water shoes, or savor a slice of pizza and a beer in the small snack shop. You'll find large bags of ice and plenty of refrigerated or shelf-stable snacks.

Swimming enthusiasts bring individual tents and huge coolers to small beaches along the lake, where adults watch youngsters from yard chairs as water laps against their feet. Fishermen angle for of walleye, catfish and other varieties, and everyone enjoys watching great blue heron  flying over the water. The lake area also offers well-maintained restrooms and picnic shelters and plenty of horse trails. In addition, tent or RV campers can choose from multiple campsites, often with lake views. This is a great spot for loads of low-cost fun.
