Midwest Living Review

Lisa Waterman Gray
This Italian villa-inspired bed-and-breakfast offers unexpected luxury amid lush rural landscape.

Terra-cotta stucco and broad, multifloor verandas wrap Casa Somerset Bed and Breakfast, located at the end of a long gravel driveway flanked by hundreds of young grape vines. A red roof enhances this lovely three-story villa's warm appearance. Classical sculptures decorate a stand of lilies. Four guest rooms include the cherub-filled Raphael Room, with multiple deep red accents and a deep whirlpool tub, and the Winery Room, which has a large, disabled-accessible walk-in shower and soothing color scheme featuring deep purple and pale blue.

Tall ceilings and sturdy beams anchor the welcoming living room, where deep leather sofas encourage conversation. Co-owner Michael Hursey is a trained chef and caterer who frequently offers Limoncello cake or homemade tiramisu to guests.

Enjoy free Wi-Fi and breakfasts made with many local ingredients, including sausage, fresh eggs, apricot jam and biscuits. The only television is in the dining room, which could interrupt guests in adjacent rooms. You can hear the owners talking or moving around the house from some guest rooms. Satin sheets on beds are meant to enhance romance, but may not appeal to some guests; in fact, some photos on the business' website look a bit more cheesy/suggestive than we'd like. But it's a pleasant stay at a reasonable price; from $140 per night.
