Midwest Living Review
Atchison's Snow Ball Ice Cream and Candy Shoppe is the place for Little League team postgame treats and teen first dates. On Saturday afternoon, we spotted Atchison's mayor hosting a meeting with local business owners over scoops. The family-owned sweet shop boasts 24 flavors of Blue Bunny ice cream (standby favorites plus Birthday Cake Batter, Cotton Candy and Praline Pecan) and the largest three-scoop, pineapple, strawberry and fudge-topped banana split in town. Grinning young servers make homemade breakfast and lunch sandwiches daily. The bacon-packed BLT on toasted ciabatta bread, $3.50, sure looked tempting (even after finishing a gigantic two-scoop mocha almond fudge sugar cone, $1.59). Meal specials include club, roast beef and ranch chicken sandwiches (with a scoop of ice cream afterwards), $6.50. Seasonal soups are potato-bacon, chicken noodle and chili. The cheery, country decorated restaurant with color-blocked walls, original stamped tin ceiling and plank wood floors sells old-fashioned candies, such as licorice, turtles, truffles and jelly beans. Get flavored coffees and chai teas at the full-service espresso bar. The adjacent Willow Brook shop carries small gifts, tabletop decor and candles.
