Muchnic Family Mansion & Art Gallery

Fans of ornate Queen Anne Victorian architecture should plan to stop here when in Atchison. The ornate millwork in this 1922 home is stunning, and you could easily pass an hour wandering from room to room admiring the moldings, door frames and the staircase. The home was built for lumber merchant George W. Howell and sold in 1922 to the Muchnic family. Today, it's part of the Muchnic Foundation and is used in part for an art gallery. The contemporary paintings, photographs and pottery here tend to contrast with the home's formal, Victorian nature, but it seems appropriate for a home whose architecture is true art to also host works of other artists. Be sure not to miss the millwork, the parquet floors, the newel posts and the stained glass.
