Midwest Living Review

Doug Clough
Even with so-so food, the Windmill Cafe is probably the best of the sparse breakfast options in Pella.

The Windmill Cafe is simultaneously right at home and quite out of place in this Dutch-rooted community. The Greek owners named their establishment to blend in with other town-square shops like De Pelikaan Dutch Imports and Vander Ploeg Bakery, but the menu highlights basic American breakfast fare with a Greek influence. Prices are reasonable, from one egg with toast for $1.95 to steak and eggs ringing in at $7.95. Qualitywise, the food’s pretty much what you’d expect for the money. The pancakes are filling, essentially the same as you’d find in a chain eatery, and we suspect the strawberry topping was nothing more than frozen berries. Our hash browns arrived a little less brown than we would have liked, but we do recommend the Mediterranean omelet stuffed with gyro meat, feta cheese, tomatoes and onions.

There's plenty of booth and table seating, and the servers are friendly and efficient. The Windmill Cafe lacks wow factor but is definitely a better experience than your average hotel Continental breakfast.
