Midwest Living Review
If you find yourself craving a cool treat on a hot day in Iowa City, head toward Heyn’s Ice Cream. Fair warning: This 20-year-old ice cream parlor is a favorite among local families and University of Iowa students, which means lines can be long, sometimes even snaking out the door. But, with nearly 40 flavors of tasty ice cream made daily by hand, Heyn’s is worth a wait.
Within a no-frills storefront, servers scoop up an array of ice cream treats, including shakes and sundaes. In the mood for a simple vanilla cone? They’ve got you’ve covered. Classic hot fudge sundae or banana split? Yep. A hand-dipped waffle cone with sprinkles and decadent turtle cheesecake ice cream? Check. Heyn’s has all the basic flavors down cold (so to speak), along with some creative variations like coconut chip, apple pie and blueberry cheesecake. Try a sample if you can't decide. Heyn’s sells pints and half-gallons for customers to enjoy at home. Sugar-free and low-carb treats are also available, as are dairy-free sorbets.
Cash or checks only.
