Midwest Living Review
Deluxe Cakes and Pastries combines an old-school, Formica-and-chrome feel with delicious, modern desserts. Specialties include a killer red velvet cake (or cupcake), the only French macarons in Iowa City, and assorted holiday treats and pastries. A visit is a treat for more than just your taste buds. Pastry chef Jamie Powers and her team take the time to make their goodies beautiful, adding a sprinkle here and a dollop there to bring whimsy to your sugar splurge. Motown music plays in the background. The scent of sugar hangs in the air. But it's the desserts that are the draw. Though we just scratched the surface on sampling, we enjoyed the strawberry morning biscuits ($1.25), brownies and blondies ($2.50 each), French macarons ($1.25; there's an assortment of flavors but we love the classic almond), assorted cookies almost too adorable to eat, and Intelligentsia coffees. Come early for the best selection: Macarons can sell out, and when they're gone, they're gone. A visit is best enjoyed by savoring a treat and a cappuccino in the cozy seating area, listening to Motown seated next to others reading their papers and tapping away at laptops. There's a miniature table for the small set, along with a basket of well-worn storybooks. And don't miss the ever-changing display of specialty cakes along the wall, providing ideas for future festivities.
