Midwest Living Review
Vom Fass is an adventure for the tastebuds—and a bit of a splurge for the pocketbook. A long, narrow space lined with casks, kegs and colorful bottles, this high-end store introduces customers to gourmet ingredients and small-batch beverages from around the world. The concept originated in Europe; this outlet is the sixth location to open in the U.S. Customers sample and learn, then choose from a selection of shapely bottles to fill with the libation of their choice. Moving between spirits, fragrant oils and spicy vinegars, the staff helps create combinations to suit any dish or theme.
Imaginative cooks will easily find creative ways to put these products to use, but the prices can be eye-opening. Single-malt whiskies cost $15 to $20 for 50 ml. (about 1.5 ounces), and a 50-ml. pour of limoncello liqueur runs around $12. Prices for the oils range from a few dollars to more than $20 per 100 ml. (about 3 ounces).
Vom Fass holds classes after hours for $25 per person; topics include Scotch whisky paired with tastes from adjacent Cheese Shop.
