Midwest Living Review

Kendra L. Williams
Succulent barbecued meats, sinful side dishes and solid desserts satisfy at this step-above-casual restaurant spot in Beaverdale.

From the instant you pull up and climb out of your car, you can smell the grill smoke. And it smells goooood. Then you step inside and start to take in the interesting mix that is Flying Mango. It's casual in that you can wear jeans and a T-shirt, but you'll pay between $15 and $28 per entree, which is more than barbecue fans are used to shelling out. And some menu items have names like Bass-Akwards Chicken Wings and Red Neck Surf n Turf, which sound a little lowbrow. But this is no backwoods smoked-meat joint. Flying Mango specializes in barbecue and flavors of the Caribbean, and the menu is long and varied enough that you could go every month and have a completely different dining experience.

We went with a big group, so we ordered all of the starters (quesadillas, wings, smoked chicken dip and tacos—fish, brisket and pork). We had no complaints, but felt the dishes became memorable once the entrees arrived. The 24-hour beef brisket balances juicy, tender beef with smoky sauce. The Cajun shrimp and dirty rice rivaled anything we've tried farther south along the Mississippi, and the seared yellowfin tuna with mango salsa over black beans and rice made that healthful choice feel decadent because the fish was so perfectly cooked. We balked at the $4 price tag for the corn bread and honey butter but ordered it nonetheless...and after wolfing down the dense, moist piece that was as big as our palm, we felt $4 was fair after all.

Desserts change depending on the day, so check with your server. But no matter what you order here, you'll go home full and happy.
