Midwest Living Review
“Vitame vas” (“welcome” in Czech) signs greet guests at The Blue Toad restaurant in the heart of Czech Village. Czech specialties include pork loin, goulash, chicken paprika, cabbage rolls and mushroom tarts (all $9.25). We visited for lunch and tried the mushroom tart (sauteed mushrooms and pork loin with paprika sauce on a fresh-baked puff pastry) and cabbage rolls (ground chuck and rice wrapped in a cabbage leaf and baked in a rich, slightly sweet tomato sauce with a hint of clove). Homemade liver dumpling soup, red cabbage, sauerkraut, dumplings and bread came with the meals.
The food was excellent, but the huge portions were overwhelming, especially for lunch. We had to pass on dessert options such as warm cherry and apple strudel. Also, with only one waitress on duty and a full restaurant, we had to wait awhile for our meal.
We'd recommend coming for dinner and doing the Czech dine-around: Have a drink at the Red Baron Bar, dinner at Al’s and dessert at Sykora Bakery.
