Midwest Living Review

The newly restored CSPS Hall serves as an anchor for the New Bohemia neighborhood by supporting art, music, theater and dance.

After a $7 million restoration and expansion, CSPS Hall, Cedar Rapids' oldest building, celebrated its grand reopening in August 2011. The 2008 flood hit the building hard, with 10 feet of water devastating the first floor. Legion Arts, the nonprofit that bought the building, has since brought CSPS into the 21st century while maintaining its historical integrity.

Named for the Czech fraternal group that opened the building in 1891 as a social hall, CSPS has been a home for art, music and theater since 1991. It now includes a community gallery featuring local art as well as a small black box theater and a 200-seat theater that host a variety of performances. An Art Deco-period bar has been refurbished. Artists live and work in the firehouse building next door for one-week stints. During our visit, we saw an exhibit of guitars damaged by the flood reconstructed into artworks.

Check the Legion Arts website for the performance schedule.
