Midwest Living Review

Trevor Meers
A courthouse-square restaurant in rural Iowa makes a great casual meal with friendly spirit, but the fine dining is still a work in progress.

Anything Sweet is the kind of business we all want to support. It’s a storefront cafe (inside an old bank with the vault door still visible) on a courthouse square run by local owners serving family recipes. The cafe began by selling sweets and pastries and has expanded to lunch and special dinners built around German and Italian dishes. The Saturday night dinner-and-a-movie concept provides a fun idea for a night out, with themes like “Dinner with the Doctor,” where fans gather to watch Doctor Who.

We visited for a Valentine’s Day meal that offered two seatings and a $30 prix fixe menu featuring fruit with a chocolate fountain, salad, entrée of chocolate-rubbed ribeye or pork chops, and dessert of cheesecake or bread pudding. We especially enjoyed the ribeye, which had great flavor and was cooked to the perfect temperature. The bread pudding was delicious and just a little spicy.

The restaurant’s weakness is presentation that needs to up its game. The 8 p.m. seating wasn’t ready at 8, requiring diners to stand and wait while the handful of tables were bussed. The kitchen immediately ran out of iced tea, and we had to repeatedly ask for refills. Napkins were wrinkled paper, which seemed below par for a meal that costs $30 in small-town Iowa. We appreciated that the owner stopped by every table for an enthusiastic visit, and we hope she’ll continue to boost the atmosphere and service so they match the quality food.
