Midwest Living Review
Ackerman Winery's award-winning vintages prove wine doesn't always have to be made from grapes. Some of the varieties are traditional Iowa flavors, such as strawberry, cherry and rhubarb. Others are more exotic, like mango and pomegranate. The wines are sweeter than many grape-base wines and are perhaps best enjoyed as a dessert wine or, as Ackerman suggests of its black raspberry, over ice cream for a special treat. The winery also sells the more familiar wines, such as concord, Merlot and Riesling, but without a doubt, fruits are the specialty. In addition to rows of wine, the shop carries an impressive assortment of wines racks and wine accessories, and visitors can take a self-guided tour of the production and filtering area, stainless-steel storage tanks and bottling system. Even if sweet fruit wines aren't your preference, Ackerman is a must-try while in the Amana Colonies.
