The Amish Communities of Arcola and Arthur, Ill.
From these quiet towns, roads lead past Amish farms, where windmills spin beside cavernous barns and simple, white frame houses, often with additions to accommodate two or more generations. Hand-lettered signs direct you to furniture-makers, bakers, fruit stands and other Amish home-based businesses.
You can pick up a guide to shops and other attractions at the Historical Train Depot and Visitors Center in Arcola. Browse shops along Main Street there and in Arthur (nine miles west). Don't miss The Calico Workshop and Oak Furniture, one of my personal favorites.
The Dutch Oven in Arthur serves hearty Amish-style meals and homemade pie. Five miles west of Arcola, you'll find an Amish home, family-style restaurant, gardens, workshops and stores at Rockome Gardens, a 15-acre theme park. Arcola Information Center (800/336-5456). Arthur Information Center (800/722-6474).
For an overnight stay, try The Flower Patch, a homey 1864 Victorian bed and breakfast in Arcola, or Heart and Home Bed and Breakfast in Arthur (doubles at both from about $70).
