By Barbara Humeston, Contributing Editor, Midwest Living

(ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED: JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2001)

Nell Hill's is a "dream shop" for home decorators in the eastern Kansas town of Atchison (40 miles northwest of Kansas City). From $4 pewter picture frames to upholstered furniture and hand-painted dishes, as well as French antiques worth thousands, the eclectic and elegant merchandise draws customers from near and far.

Owner Mary Carol Garrity named the two-story shop after her maternal grandmother. She also has two other nearby stores: G. Diebolts store, named after her father, features bedroom furnishings and linens. Her brand-new shop, Encore, specializes in antiques, artwork and a collection of wicker pieces.

All three stores open Mondays - Saturdays 10:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. (913/367-1086).
