Michigan's Azure-Blue Crystal Lake
Hugged by a 20-mile shoreline, spring-fed Crystal Lake (two miles north of Frankfort) reflects the sky in a dazzling blue, ringed by forests, cottages and friendly small towns. The intensity of color is startling, with a depth of blue seldom equaled.
Visitors come for the natural beauty of blazing sunsets, for fishing, boating, lazy days and balmy breezes wafting off Lake Michigan a few dunes to the west. Wander around the nearby friendly towns of Beulah, Benzonia and Frankfort, where you can browse the galleries, studios and shops. It's worth a special stop at Gwen Frostic Prints at Benzonia for original block prints, books, cards and pictures.
Although the relaxing pace is addictive, you'll probably find time to visit Point Betsie Lighthouse on State-22. Then continue north to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and stop at the Visitor Center at Empire to check out the many activities the Lakeshore offers.
