A Michigan Treasure: Elk Lake
Another jewel, 26-mile-long Elk Lake, is part of a 75-mile chain of 14 lakes and connecting streams that empties into Lake Michigan at Elk Rapids. It is 18 miles north of Traverse City on US-31. The area of four-season resorts welcomes fishermen, sightseers and golfers during the summer months. Snowmobilers and cross-country skiers return to relish the beauty of winter. For serenity and quietude, explore the smooth waters ringed with a forest of northern hardwoods, as well as its 17 tributaries, five parks and five boat ramps.
Outdoor activities include boating, sailing, canoeing and fishing. Elk Rapids is a popular haven for Lake Michigan boaters, with a large marina, accommodations from upscale to homey resorts, fine dining to family fare, and shopping to please most any taste. Visitors stroll the river walk; youngsters try their luck at the Kids' Fishing Pond; and golfers look for their own kind of luck at the lakeside Elk Rapids Golf Club.
