Explore the water in parks across the Midwest

Sugar River Forest Preserve, Illinois

Oak-studded hills and tall pines rise like a mirage at this small Winnebago County park amid endless corn and soybean fields (25 miles northwest of Rockford). Visitors often canoe or tube (rentals in nearby towns) the gently flowing river, which gave the preserve its name.

About five miles of walking trails wind along the water, through a forest of oaks, ashes and maples. You pass a prairie area that's being restored with native grasses. If you're looking for a picnic stop, you'll find secluded tables at shady sites throughout the quiet park.

82 sites. 5500 Northrock Dr., Rockford, IL 61103 (815/877-6100).
