Explore the water in parks across the Midwest

Camping, hiking, picnicking: Everything's better by a river or a lake.

Little Girl's Point, Michigan

According to legend, an Ojibwa daughter disappeared after a jaunt to explore this wooded point of Gogebic County in the southwest corner of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Reputedly, her ghost still roams the shore.

After you drive past stands of pines and spot blue Lake Superior, you'll know what attracted the maiden to this small park (about 20 miles north of Ironwood). Civilization seems far away.

A picnic area with grills tops a bluff. Some campsites overlook the water.

If you want to sunbathe or venture into the chilly water, head for the sandy crescent of beach. Stick around for the sunset, when the sky and lake glow like wildfire.

32 sites. Tent camping only. Box 706, Ironwood, MI 49938 (906/932-4850).
