Explore North Dakota's Devils Lake
This is North Dakota's largest natural lake. Pioneer settlers referred to it as the inner ocean, and for good reason. The 140,000-acre lake with more than 375 miles of shoreline is an anomaly on the prairie landscape.
The area offers so many different things to do that it'll surely please all the wants and needs of a family vacation. Sullys Hill National Game Preserve, for example, has an auto tour and a nature trail. This is one of the nation's 500 national wildlife refuges. Some of the animals you can see include elk, bison, white-tailed deer, prairie dogs, waterfowl and bald eagles.
The area also features historic sites, such as the old post office/federal building downtown and the old sheriff's house. And the Fort Totten State Historic Site is located nearby.
You can take part in games of chance at Spirit Lake Casino and Resort or try your luck with a fishing pole on one of the best fisheries in the region. You can catch walleye, pike, white bass and, when the water freezes, pull a few jumbo perch through a hole in the ice. Or spend a relaxing weekend at a place such as Woodland Resort, which has cabins, motel rooms, a restaurant and plenty of help for your hunting and fishing needs.
