Midwest Living Review

Kim Ranegar
Notre Dame University attracts the most visitors in Indiana -- nearly 700,000 annually.

Founded in 1842, Notre Dame stands on 1,250 picturesque acres just moments from downtown South Bend. Hallmarks of the campus are Gothic architecture, ivy-covered walls and a parklike feeling. A statue of Mary atop the main building and the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes -- a replica (just one-seventh the size) of the famed French shrine where the Virgin Mary appeared to Saint Bernadette in 1858 -- reference the college's focus on faith. The grotto is a special place to spend a few quiet moments, light a candle, propose marriage (like hundreds of students) or pray the Rosary daily at 6:45 p.m. every day. Home to 12,000 students, the school is known for rigorous academics and spirited NCAA Division 1 athletics, notably football! The stadium is famous for its view of "Touchdown Jesus," a nickname given to the large mural entitled "The Word of Life" by Millard Sheets and installed in 1964 on the wall of the nearby Hesburgh Library. The mosaic looms over the stadium, and the arms of the resurrected Jesus in the work seem to mirror the raised arms of a referee signifying a touchdown. The new Eddy Street Commons is located across the street from campus and offers great options for shopping, dining, and entertainment, as well as a modern Fairfield Inn and Suites. You'll find many dining options, including a Mexican grill, burger choices, several bars and Kilwin's Chocolates and Ice Cream, alongside Urban Outfitters, Outpost Sports, the Hammes Bookstore and the Nicholas J Salon and Spa.
