Midwest Living Review

Damaine Vonada
The Martha E. Parry Bed and Breakfast provides guests with gracious accommodations.

Because of its prominent stained-glass window, people in Richmond have always called the fine classic revival dwelling along the Old National Road "the house with the big stained-glass window." (Big surprise there!) But when Jill and Kris Nelson bought the house and decided to share it with overnight guests, they named it the Martha E. Parry Bed and Breakfast in honor of the wealthy woman who chose the magnificent window for her new home. With its original mahogany staircase and light fixtures, the splendid house evokes Richmond's industrial heyday. Today, guests stay in spacious rooms discerningly furnished with antiques and period reproductions, and when the morning sun illuminates the home's renowned window, they enjoy an up close look at its rich colors and lovely Art Nouveau motifs. For breakfast, Jill serves homemade dishes like quiche and baked French toast in the elegant dining room. Because the Nelsons and their two young children reside on the top floor of the house, guests sometimes get to meet or briefly chat with the kids. Looking for adult-only lodging or a place to have a girlfriends getaway? The couple also own and operate the nearby Philip W. Smith Bed and Breakfast in a historic Queen Anne home as well as Girls Night Inn, a rambling Victorian house with furnishings geared to scrapbook sessions and grown-up pajama parties. Rooms at the Parry Bed and Breakfast start at $109.
