Shiny vats of beer leave no doubt this is a working brewery. Glance at the menu, and it's clear they take food -- and local producers -- seriously, too. Just don't expect anything stuffy. The vibrant pulp-fiction artwork on the wall carries over to labels for their beers, which usually number at least a dozen and boast names such as Bat out of Helles, Bonfire of the Valkyries (a black lager), Hoosier Daddy and Hoptimus India Pale Ale. The food menu tempts with intriguing twists on American fare, such as lavender oil and bacon and horseradish sauce with house-cut fries. Signature sandwiches include porter-braised beef short ribs heaped on crusty French bread with pickled red onions and honey mustard or the Croque Madame, with its pile of applewood-smoked ham, prosciutto, white cheddar cheese, Mornay sauce and a sunny-side egg on locally baked crusty bread. Best time to visit? When the weather is warm and they throw open glass garage doors in both the main restaurant and enclosed patio added in early 2012. If you're more into pizza, try New Albanian's Pizzeria and Public House on the city's northside.
