Midwest Living Review

Kit Bernardi
At this luxe B&B, guests enjoy ultraprivate rooms, a swimming pool, recreation amenities and multicourse gourmet breakfasts.

Tucked into Middlebury’s woodlands not far from the Shipshewana Flea Market grounds, the McKenzie House Bed and Breakfast welcomes guests with luxury accommodations and homey comforts. At the entrance of the yellow nine-room farmhouse, a cozy wrap-around porch decked out with swings and rocking chairs sets the tone for a peaceful, relaxing stay.

Owners Sherry and Bruce Hamilton greet guests and give tours of the inn, pointing out features like a music room, crafting studio and basement movie-recreation room; a heated outdoor pool and fire pit are open seasonally. Two posh suites in a turreted coach house offer full kitchens, Jacuzzi baths, four-posters, lounging areas and private decks.

Guests awake to the aromas of fresh-baked coffeecake and bacon, just a couple elements of the gourmet breakfasts served daily in the sunroom. Variable offerings might include cheesy frittata with a crispy hash brown crust, raspberry cream pastries, pear-blueberry cobbler, smoked ham, fresh fruit yogurt parfaits, and a selection of fresh-squeezed juices and flavored coffees.

Double-occupancy rates start at $89 for rooms in the main house; the coach house suites start at $149. All rates include breakfast, Wi-Fi and cable television. Children are welcome; there’s a $20 per night charge for additional room occupants.
