Midwest Living Review

This National Historic Landmark holds lovely events and has Civil War-Era formal gardens.

Run by the Indiana State Historical Society, this Greek Revival mansion was built in 1844 for financier and railroad magnate James F.D. Lanier. Visitors can buy tickets for tours, held several times a day, or can simply stroll through the gardens overlooking the Ohio River behind the stately home. Each May, the mansion is part of Madison's tour of homes, and it also holds a Spirits of Christmas Past event each December, complete with crafts for children, food and a Victorian Era Santa Claus.
