Midwest Living Review

History buffs looking for stories about this 200-year-old river town will love this museum.

It's nothing fancy, but it's thoughtful and informative. And if you want to better understand Madison, Indiana, you ought to plan for a couple of hours here. The experience includes two buildings, actually -- an old train depot where the romance of rail travel still hangs in the air, and the Heritage Center, which is filled with placards, old photos, artifacts and re-created homes and businesses from Madison's past. The vignettes tell the story of an Ohio River town that boomed thanks to its geography and hardworking founders. A pioneer home shows humble furnishings; a Victorian parlor shows clothing, furniture, art and artifacts owned by people who lived in Madison at that time; a Civil War exhibit explores a raid that took place in Jefferson County. In the old depot, visitors see how the agent's office was outfitted in 1903 and learn about what railroad traffic meant to this area at this time (and what happened when service stopped in 1931). Wrap up your visit by walking through the old red caboose on the property to get a feel for how railroad workers lived on-board during that era. Admission charged.
