Midwest Living Review

This newer restaurant offers reasonable prices but forgettable food.

Our visit to Franco's was a weird mix of experiences. We'd heard it opened in 2010, so we wanted to check it out, and we were in the mood for Italian food. But the fact is, you'll get better Italian food at the Olive Garden and better sandwiches down the street at the Red Pepper Deli. When you couple that with the standoffish service and the mumbling homeless man occupying a table near us, we definitely felt we wouldn't be back. The dining room has two parts, one designed to be closed off for parties. The banquet-style tables and chairs are covered in white tablecloths, which is a nice touch, but topped with bowls of sugar packets. We tried the Parma sandwich served with homemade potato chips ($8.50); the sandwich was made with quality Boar's Head deli meat, the roll was fresh-baked and the chips were fine. The spaghetti in tomato sauce ($7) comes with a bowl of iceberg lettuce, and the tomato sauce was an oily concoction that did not taste particularly flavorful. For some reason, we agreed to dessert, an ice cream-filled crepe special that came swimming in a sugary strawberry sauce. With only two nights to eat dinner in Madison, we were bummed we blew one night on Franco's.
