Midwest Living Review

A hidden gem in downtown Indy, this original Art Deco barber shop has catered to loyal clientele since the Great Depression.

Located on the second floor of the Circle Tower building--smack dab in the center of downtown--Studio 2000 derives its name from the suite number the barber shop/salon has occupied since 1929. The interior has been described as the best remaining example of Art Deco design in the world; the tile floor is original and still bears the worn spots where barbers stood for hours on end. The period decor remains "manly," its images paying reverence to everything from comely, bathing-suit-clad women to Charles Lindbergh's flight across the Atlantic. The windows offer great views of the fountains at adjacent Monument Circle. The shop was once the sole domain of wealthy men. Pharmaceuticals giant Eli Lilly was a customer, and it's rumored that John Dillinger once got his hair cut here. The salon now caters to both sexes. A men's haircut and style begins at $30, women's at $40. There's also a spa offering manicures, massages and skincare services. The house specialty is the D-Age Antioxidant firming skin repair ($85). Be forewarned: We were put off by the changing room which is tiny and dark.
