Midwest Living Review

Dog-owners take their puppies for play time at the Humane Society Pet Park on the Indianapolis Northwest side.

Your best friend may think you're barking mad if you skip the Indianapolis Humane Society's Pet Park, located along a nice wooded creek east of Michigan Road just north of 79th Street. There's a large, rolling play area of more than 2 acres with 2 1/2 miles of wooded trails outside the main fenced section. (Leashes required on trails.) There are also plenty of trees inside the play space for shade and necessities. In the center is an 11-element agility course including a tunnel, two up-and-back-down ramps, hurdles, a series of quick-turn posts and other items. All are solidly constructed to take a pounding from the biggest pooches. The agility course is fenced within the larger play area, which patrons say also makes it ideal for dogs that need some simmer-down time. Yearly membership in the Humane Society is required, along with vaccination and spay/neuter records. Daily passes ($8) are also available for visitors. The park is equipped with cleanup equipment and waste containers. There is a water pump, and they encourage you to bring your own bowls, but there are some on site if you forget. There is also a box of free Frisbees in the lobby of the nice Humane Society building. There is plenty of parking, and access to the play area is by electric key-fob that you get with membership. Hours: 7:30 a.m.-7:00 p.m. (fall/winter); 7 a.m.-9 p.m. (spring/summer).
