Midwest Living Review

Amy Lynch
Open 24 hours, Peppy Grill dishes up no-nonsense burgers and breakfast for hardcore diner food aficionados.

Located in the funky Fountain Square neighborhood just southeast of downtown Indianapolis, old-school Peppy Grill caters to an eclectic crowd of loyal regulars. The tiny greasy spoon offers all the diner food greatest hits -- burgers, fries, shakes, sandwiches and a smattering of mostly fried dinners along the lines of chicken, fish and tenderloins. Breakfast (served all day) is perhaps the best way to go, featuring appetizing plates piled high with eggs, bacon, pancakes, home fries and classic Hoosier biscuits and gravy. We stopped in to sample the burgers. The quarter-pound beef patties are char-grilled, then topped with basic add-ons like American cheese, tomato, lettuce and onion and served on a plain white bun. They are nothing fancy, but certainly tasty and filling. A fully dressed single cheeseburger costs $3.65, a fair price for what we received. Sides are what you'd expect -- chili, coleslaw, potato salad and all manner of fried accoutrements. The home fries are sliced fresh, the rest of the potato options come frozen straight out of a bag. That was a little disappointing, although the curly fries were perfectly hot and crispy and the "sour cream fries" (prefab potato wedges flavored with sour-cream-and-onion seasoning) were much tastier than we expected. The service and food Peppy Grill is about as basic as it gets, but the eatery does deliver dependable diner fare in a comfortable casual atmosphere.
