When it opened in 2007, the Flying Cupcake was the first cupcake bakery in Indiana. It has some competition now, but it is still a local favorite. Except for its roving truck, all four of its locations in the Indianapolis area, including a new spot on the north side, are decorated in vintage, shabby-chic decor—a charming setting for handfuls of sweetness.

The jumbo Red Velvet Elvis stars ($3.50); rich cream cheese frosting, red sprinkles and shaved white chocolate top  this moist, dense cupcake with baked-in chocolate chunks. We also love the Cheeky Cherry Cheese, a combination of white cake and cheesecake topped with cherry filling, and the Salted Chocolate Caramel, chocolate cake filled with caramel and topped with chocolate-caramel ganache and sprinkles of salt.

The Flying Cupcake also bakes up savory flavors, such as the Hungry Lumberjack topped with crumbled bacon. And you’ll find at least one vegan and one gluten-free option daily, so truly everyone can indulge once in awhile. theflyingcupcakebakery.com
