Midwest Living Review

A lush spa is the highlight of this elaborate Italianate inn in Indianapolis

An imposing Florentine mansion marks the third turn-of-the-century home on the north side of Indianapolis that Jeneane Life has converted into an elegant B&B. Yet this destination hasn't quite hit its stride. The inn's lodging experience seems to a lower priority for management than either its comprehensive spa or its Hearth Room restaurant. The spa occupies the inn's lower level, part of its carriage house and its elegant ballroom (now home to a hair and nail salon). It offers a comprehensive range of treatments including massages, facials, body treatments and manicures/pedicures, all of which seem to cater to an upscale local clientele. The Hearth Room, too, has a solid local following, with an interesting menu, special events like wine-pairing dinners and plenty of accolades from the Indianapolis press. For inn guests, though, the breakfast can be disappointing--as in cold-in-the-center microwaved quiche and inattentive service. The building itself is a beauty. On a street lined with grand buildings, the Villa Inn stands out for its elaborate stonework, unusual trefoil windows and parapet roof detail. The embellishments continue inside, with ornate plasterwork, vaulted ceilings and hand-carved woodwork. Guest rooms are spacious and richly appointed, with oriental rugs, damask curtains and velvet throws. Posh and ornate is the style here, so innkeepers should pay better attention to little maintenance mishaps like patches of peeling paint and buckling wallpaper. With some service improvements, the Villa Inn has the potential to be a dreamy destination for B&B as well as spa fans.
