Midwest Living Review

Kendra L. Williams
A $7 million renovation completed in spring 2011 has given this property known for its exceptional service a welcome spruce-up to its rooms.

Since it opened in 1913 as the Grand Hotel, the Omni Severin has been known for its service. From the moment you pull up, the bellmen call you by name, using Ms. or Mr., as appropriate. They offer you bottles of water, ask about your journey and welcome you to the 424-room upscale hotel. Every staff member, from the maintenance guy we chatted with on the elevator to the housekeepers dressed in crisp black dresses and starched white aprons, ask how your stay is going and whether they can do anything to help. It's the kind of attention to detail we could get used to. But the guest rooms had been admittedly tired, and this renovation has infused them with a soothing earth-tone color palette and amenities travelers love. You'll find new bedding, new carpeting, new curved shower rods and shower curtains, new lowboys that take up less space, new lighting (all of the lights have dimmer switches), higher-end bath products and HD-flat-screen TVs. The suites, located on the 13th floor, also boast new patio furniture on the private terraces, new wallpaper, new desks and chairs and new bathroom fixtures. You'll still pay $9.95 a day for internet access, which rubs us the wrong way in an era when Wi-Fi is as expected at TV service. The downtown hotel fills with mostly business travelers during the week and leisure travelers on the weekend; during our stay, three wedding parties were there, and the lobby often teemed with couples dressed for those special occasions. It's within walking distance to most of Indy's big attractions and is a block from Lucas Oil Stadium (and holds Colts tailgating parties on game days). Rates from $139 during the peak summer travel season. Valet parking is $27 a night.
