Midwest Living Review

New in 2010, this downtown lodging puts visitors within walking distance of many of Indy's best attractions.

For the Courtyard by Marriott Indianapolis Downtown, it's a classic case of location, location, location. It's steps across the street to the Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art, which is next to the Indiana State Museum. A long football pass nearly reaches the NCAA Hall of Champions. And nearby, you'll also find the Indianapolis Zoo and White River Gardens. Opened in February 2010, the Courtyard offers plush mattresses and bedding, a work area with plenty of elbow room, square footage to spare and generous floor-to-ceiling windows framing White River State Park and, from some rooms, Victory Field, home of the AAA league Indianapolis Indians. Of course, there's no actual courtyard, part of the price Marriott pays for shoehorning four of its hotels onto the same block at the west edge of the Indianapolis downtown. The location also is home to a new Fairfield Inn and Suites, a SpringHill Suites and the Courtyard, which shares a 15-story building with the SpringHill (there are separate lobbies and elevators, small pool and workout room in common). Still in construction is the signature JW Marriott Indianapolis, a beautiful blue glass tower set to open in winter 2011. Altogether, the complex will have more than 1,600 rooms. The graceful lobby has a library of Indianapolis business and tourism reference books, three Internet stations and three "media pods" basically small, TV-equipped booths. Guests can get free coffee from 5 to 10 a.m. (also 5-8 p.m.) and a slightly pricey counter-service breakfast at The Bistro. (Morning Scramble or Daybreak Fried Eggs are $8.75; Thick Cut French Toast is $6.95) The Bistro also has light snacks throughout the day, plus wines, beer and cocktails ($5-$11). A TGIFridays is 30 seconds away, and a 10-minute walk takes you to Circle Center Mall's selection of eateries. Room rates start at $119 per night. For parking, you can go the valet route for $25 per night, or self-park in the clean, well-lit underground lot for $20 per night.
