Midwest Living Review

Kit Bernardi
A former estate retreat, Grey Goose Inn provides gorgeous views and comfortable (if a bit tired) accommodations.

Prime location and privacy make Gray Goose Inn an easy place to overnight. The rambling clapboard inn on the former Palmera Farm in Chesterton is close to the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and an hour from downtown Chicago. Once a doctor's summer retreat, the quiet bed-and-breakfast overlooks a private lake and wooded ravine on the 100-acre property laced with hiking trails (in the winter, cross-country skiing trails). While the flowery English country decor, dotted with antiques and dried blooms, is a bit tired, the inn is comfortable and provides views of Midwest woodlands that are bucolic year-round. In the solarium, guests look out on a tranquil lake over full breakfasts. Morning entrees change daily, but house specialties include eggs Benedict and lemon pancakes with raspberry sauce. All five standard guestrooms have private baths and free Wi-Fi ($110 to $130 a night). Many standard rooms also have outdoor decks. The queen-bed suites and the premium king-bed Gray Goose suite have whirlpool tubs, fireplaces and DVD players ($165 to $185 a night). Rates go up on weekends; pets stay for $25 a night. On holiday weekends, a two-night stay is required.
