Midwest Living Review
Tucked into a 4-acre property and surrounded by 100 acres of private woods, At Home in the Woods Bed and Breakfast in rural northwest Indiana seems like it's miles from anywhere, but is really only 15 minutes from Lake Michigan's Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and college town Valparaiso. But it offers plenty of in-the-country amenities. Hiking trails wind through the property. Guests take a dip in the large swimming pool, watch deer and native songbirds from the elevated deck, or pick fresh blueberries and blackberries in the garden. The ecofriendly inn (owners use line-dried linens, compost bins and rain barrels) has three bedrooms, each decorated in a different national park theme. All have a private bath, hot tub and fireplace. It's likely a stay would be relaxing, but, for ultraprivate people, it might be a little too much like residing with family: Two upstairs guestrooms are situated close together in the A-frame building, and all three guest rooms share the deck-side, downstairs recreation room. Owners Victoria and Scott Phillips (who live in a separate building) go out of their way to make visitors feel at home by picking up guests coming in on the South Shore Train, stocking the 24-hour snack and beverage bar, and preparing a scrumptious four-course breakfast. Victoria bakes a variety of breads and muffins (orange pecan, cherry cream), seasonal fruit cobblers, parfaits, breads and fluffy French toast, and eggs with bacon. Her cookbook for sale has the recipes. If you're looking for a great escape (and aren't super private), consider staying here. Rates start at $119 for a room with a double bed.
