Find yourself in the forest at this beautifully restored log cabin rental near Patoka Lake and the Hoosier National Forest.

At The Little Log Cabin in the Woods, there is no doubt that you are off the beaten path. A winding county road at Patoka Lake leads to the owners' drive. An even more winding lane leads to their residence -- your check-in site -- past a peach orchard and through 60-some acres of restored tallgrass prairie fluttering with butterflies and hopping with young rabbits. And a still more winding track a mile away leads through a pine and hardwood forest to the cabin, which dates to the 1830s. Pull up to the front door and turn off the motor and you are submerged in a woodsy sounds of droning cicadas and Mourning Doves in the summer, hammering woodpeckers in the winter. The cabin is a nicely decorated 20x20 one-room affair with steep steps -- almost a ladder -- leading to a sleeping loft. There is electricity, a furnace and air-conditioning, although little cool air reaches the loft, which makes do with a ceiling fan. Attached to the back is a small addition with a modern kitchen and bathroom (shower, no tub). Windows look out into the surrounding woods, and a porch wrapping the front and side steps off into a scrupulously clean hot tub. The visitors' log tells of stillness, encounters with deer, the croaking frogs in the tiny pond -- almost a vernal pool -- outside the front door, and a raccoon that persists in climbing the bird feeder for a snack. One visitor coated the pole with cooking spray and sent the guy muttering back into the woods. For meals you can cook or drive the 20-minute jaunt into French Lick, where there are two beautifully restored old resorts. Indulge in some of the woodsy activities: biking, hiking, horseback riding, fishing at Patoka Lake, skiing at Paoli Peaks (about an hour away). There are books and magazines, board games and playing cards, but no phone, TV or radio except for a weather alert device for storm warnings. There is a two-night minimum rental ($195 per weekend night, $175 weekday, plus a $200 cash deposit). Reservations (not available online) are held by a 50 percent credit card deposit. Checkout time is noon. Children, pets and smoking in or around the cabin are not allowed.
