Midwest Living Review

Fort Wayne's convenient glassed-in conservatory is a peaceful oasis in the middle of downtown.

Even when the weather outside is frightful, it's always springtime inside Fort Wayne's 25,000-square-foot botanical conservatory. Green thumbs and wannabe gardeners alike will enjoy wandering through the three greenhouses, perhaps culling ideas for their green spaces at home. The interior hallways are full of kid-friendly exhibits, but the colorful gardens are the real reason to visit. The showcase garden greenhouse contains an always-fresh display that changes six times a year, as well as a small seasonal butterfly/moth tent where visitors can get up close and personal with several species of these magical winged creatures. The tropical greenhouse re-creates a lush rain forest environment with thriving oversized plants, waterfall features and a koi pond. At the other end of the flora spectrum, the sandy desert garden houses more than 70 different types of cacti. Outside, visitors can relax on shaded benches and contemplate the park-like beauty of the exploration garden (check out the composting demonstration site) or the more formal terrace garden. Parking is available across the street in the Civic Center garage; bring your ticket for validation with paid admission. The conservatory is closed on Mondays.
