The annual Brown County Artist Studio and Gardens Tour gives visitors a behind-the-scenes look at some of the area's most creative residents.

The inspiring natural beauty of Brown County has attracted a strong community of artists through the years, and for one weekend each June, a small group of these creative-minded folks offer curious visitors a chance to see where all the magic happens -- and an opportunity to purchase the results. Be forewarned, the annual self-guided Artist Studio and Garden Tour covers some serious mileage through some of the most rural portions of scenic Brown County. Fill your tank before you go. And then just enjoy the ride to participating studios where you can meet resident artists, observe live demonstrations and even wander through a few gardens. The list of artists changes each year to keep the tour fresh. In 2011, stops included Rosey Bolte's Uncommon Gourd studio (hand-painted gourds and a lovely rustic garden), Cheri Platter's Faerie Hollow Studio featuring handmade jewelry and precious metalwork, Chris Gustin's loom-filled Homestead Weaving Studio, Judy and Tom Pritchard's Oak Grove Pottery studio, and the T.C. Steele Historic Site, which also serves as the event headquarters. The tour is free; just stop by the Brown County Visitors Center or a handful of other locations to pick up a driving map, and follow the well-placed signage to each studio.
