Midwest Living Review

Launch your own fantastic voyage with the help of this Hoosier adventure service.

Steve Chafin left boot prints throughout the Hoosier backwoods in his younger days, and then spent 20 years organizing and carrying out lake and river restorations all around the country. So he and his Most High Adventure Outfitters are a natural choice for outdoor expeditions in central and southern Indiana. Most recently open for business in an old ice cream stand (he still sells a few scoops to drop-ins) outside Spring Mill State Park, Steve focuses on kayak and canoe outings on the East Fork of the White River (a bigger river, often muddy), as well as trips on the upper Patoka River and Salt Creek around Monroe Reservoir. He's experienced in outfitting small trips or big expeditions (for example, nearly 100 students from IU, many of whom had never been in a kayak or canoe before). He is also a fountain of Hoosier river lore. Ask him, for instance, about the fate of the old water-powered grist mill at Lawrenceport. Most High Adventure Outfitters also provides full-suspension mountain bikes for pedaling jaunts around the region, including in Spring Mill Park and Brown and Monroe counties. Indiana doesn't have much in the way of rapids or dramatic vistas, so Most High's outings are best for those who know and love the Hoosier landscape and want to get out and see the farms, fields and woods from a different, more relaxing perspective. Prices: $30-$70 per kayak/canoe for half- or full-day outings, $90 for two-day expeditions (personal flotation devices and paddles included). Bike rentals, $15-$40.
