Midwest Living Review

Kim Ranegar
Nestled in rolling hills, Dillman Farms turns out preserves, jellies and other harvests just like Grandma used to -- packing fruit and flavor into all-natural products.

The Dillman family has been putting up delicious jarred jams and jellies since the 1970s, using natural ingredients -- whole fruits, pure cane sugar and no corn syrup. They've added barbecue sauces, mustards, pickles and salsas to the line. The operation has resumed full speed again since a tornado took out two pole barns and the primary boiling operation in May 2011. Founded by Carl and Sue Dillman, the business turns out more than 600,000 jars each year to the choosiest restaurants, select stores, private label orchards throughout the Midwest and online at dillmanfarm.com. Dillman Farms operate a small retail storefront on site on State-45 in Bloomington. The friendly staff can help you choose from among more than 26 varieties of preserves, eight fruit butters (try the peach!), and dozens of other options including salsas, pickles, barbecue sauces and mustards. At the store, you can pick up an extra jar for free with the purchase of five ($6 each for 16 oz). They also make fudge and package products for gift giving. While it's hard to pick a favorite, some of Dillman's top sellers include cinnamon apple cider jelly, red raspberry preserves and something called jarred FROG (a blend of fig, raspberry, orange marmalade and ginger) that hops off the shelves by the case. The retail storefront is open daily Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and weekends 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with longer hours during peak season (summer/fall). Free tours by chance or by appointment.
