Not too fancy or too frumpy, Mother Bear's serves up pizza that's just right, all in a casual setting at affordable prices.

Mother Bear's is an old-school pizza parlor that appeals because great taste never goes out of style. Just steps from the Indiana University campus, Mother Bear's is a hit with coeds and townies alike. Entering Mother Bear's is like taking a step back into the 70s with its retro-cool colored glass pendant lights suspended over rustic wood booths covered in years of graffiti. A vintage freestanding fireplace transports you right back to basement rec rooms of yore. Though cozy, Mother Bear's truly shines when it comes to taste. Because pizza is personal, Mother Bear's offers a wide variety of choices of crusts, sauces and toppings, and they all seem to stand out. Their traditional pan pizzas are thick enough to satisfy, but not deep-dish dense. The deep dish comes rectangular with a garnish of sauce atop the cheesy goodness. And about that sauce the traditional red sauce blends sweet and tart to perfection. Opt for basic pepperoni ($9.75 for a 10-inch round) or go with one of the specialty pizzas. Favorites include the Dixie Two-Step with Southern barbecue sauce and tender chucks of chicken ($12.05 for a 10 inch) and the Spinnoccoli, made with fresh spinach and broccoli atop a decadent Parmesan garlic white sauce ($12.05 for a 10-inch). Mother Bears open daily at 11 a.m.
