Midwest Living Review

College-town charmer earns cum laude distinction among B&Bs.

Old-fashioned Hoosier hospitality isn't hard to find at the Scholars Inn Bed and Breakfast, an imposing 125-year-old brick home a few blocks north and west of Bloomington's woodsy Indiana University campus. From the Great Room downstairs to the six pleasant bedrooms on the second floor, the inn is cozy and comfortable, with enough sumptuous, glossy hardwood to build an ark. The rooms ($129-$179, seasonal), most named for Hoosier scholars and authors, offer the kind of pampered ease an honored house guest would have expected in the home's early 1900s heyday. Privacy is near complete, the bedding is fresh and luxuriant and the Great Room is always stocked with pastries, soft drinks, coffee and tea. The luxury extends to breakfast in bed (on arrangement), breakfast in the Great Room or on the backyard patio beneath towering shade trees (don't miss the hammock in a secluded nook). On Sunday, breakfast is served at the Scholar's Inn Gourmet Cafe and Wine Bar right next door. It's not free, as an inn breakfast would be, but they do provide a $25 gift certificate to make up the difference. The inn has its own slightly crotchety personality (the hardwood floors upstairs tend to roll like a gentle ocean surf and the bathrooms can be a bit cramped), but that's part of the charm of B&B life.
