Midwest Living Review

Barb Sanford
Catch the holiday spirit as you take a horse-drawn wagon ride and savor homemade treats.

You'll feel part of a Currier and Ives Christmas scene as a pair of Clydesdales lead you on an old-fashioned horse-drawn wagon ride through the woods in search of the perfect tree at this family-owned Christmas tree farm. The farm's sweet golden retrievers and Bernese mountain dogs follow your every move, whether you're looking for a tree or grabbing lunch in the cafe. You can select a precut or cut-your-own tree and find a unique ornament in the gift shop, then relax in front of the fireplace with a steaming cup of hot chocolate. Festively lit Christmas trees -- decorated with hundreds of ornaments -- and collections of snowmen, toys, Santas, nutcrackers and angels fill the gift shop. Christmas music fills the air. In the attached barn are precut pine, spruce and balsam trees of all sizes, set in stands as if they were standing in the woods, and lush wreaths. Outdoors, children can make their way through a maze and visit the reindeer, bunnies, camel, llamas, peacock, donkey, ostrich and pheasant on the Children's Farm. On weekends, enjoy the kiddie train, pony rides and Santa visits. The 960-acre farm, located near the Illinois-Wisconsin state line, was originally a dairy and hog farm and has been owned and operated by the Williams family for more than 60 years. They plant 12,000-14,000 Christmas trees on 350 acres and sell over 10,000 trees each year. Searching for and cutting down a Christmas tree here is the stuff family memories are made of. It's more than just a tree farm. It's a perfect destination for a family outing. Open daily 8 a.m.-8 p.m. mid-November through Christmas. Check website for tree prices and activity times.
