Midwest Living Review

Robert Loerzel
This festive farmers market and community fair offers a wide selection of regional food and other merchandise.

Market at the Square is a farmers market held from 7 a.m. to noon every Saturday from May through early November. It offers an extensive selection of locally grown vegetables and fruit, as well as meats, cheeses, breads, pastas, dog biscuits, popcorn, muffins and oddities such as V-Jerky, a vegetarian substitute for beef jerky. But there's more than just food. Other vendors sell woodworking, jewelry, pottery, candles and even clothing, such as dance apparel for girls. Small ensembles play folk and other styles of music at various places around the parking lot where the market is held. And assorted community groups and businesses give their pitches from tents along the edges of the market.More than 170 vendors are registered to participate in Market at the Square, and thousands of people shop at it most weekends. The event takes place rain or shine. (The neighboring city of Champaign has a farmers market 37 p.m. Thursdays from early June through early September near First and Church streets.)
