Midwest Living Review

Kendra L. Williams
Cozy booths, exposed-brick walls and Tiffany-style lamps add to the warmth to this friendly restaurant inside the Mark Twain Hotel.

On our first trip to Peoria in years, we were eager to check into our room at the Mark Twain Hotel and head out to dinner somewhere downtown. But because it was the day after Christmas and a Monday, many of Peoria's restaurants were closed, so we found ourselves at Two25 in the hotel. And actually, that worked out great. It's a dimly lit bar-and-grill setting, with exposed ductwork and pretty Tiffany-style lamps over the tables. Our server was friendly, helpful and knew that just-right balance of attention vs. privacy. The menu ranges from pizzas and inventive pastas (around $20) to Australian rack of lamb, wasabi-peanut-encrusted sea bass and an array of steaks ($30 and up). We tried the barbecue chicken pizza and found ourselves eating way more of it than we'd planned. The smoky chicken complemented the brown sugar-sweet sauce, and the chef's chocolate cake went down easily, too. The chocolate mousse with raspberry sauce, a house specialty, was perfectly creamy and rich, too. Most of the other patrons in the restaurant that night appeared to live in the area and were not hotel guests, which is a strong vote of confidence that hotel restaurants often don't enjoy. We'd definitely go back next time we're in town. It's worth noting that if you're staying at the hotel, Two25 hosts a free breakfast for guests each morning with cooked-to-order omelets and waffles, and it serves locally roasted coffees from Leaves N Beans in Peoria Heights.
